- Key facts
- In September 2026, Parliament withdrew from the SZTFH its power to manage gambling concession contracts. The Magyar government announces the abolition of the SZTFH and the distribution of its tasks among other institutions (government resolution of 31 August 2026: legal review, report of the Minister of Justice expected on 30 September 2026). The casino concessions granted before the election (up to 35 years) are under re-examination, and Hungarian courts have ruled the concession system, online casino included, contrary to EU law. SZTFH register unchanged as at 23 September 2026 (LVC Diamond, 3 domains): unstable framework, to be monitored.
What a player risks
In this market, only operators holding the local licence may offer online casino games. An offshore licence, or a licence issued for another market, does not make play legal where a local licence is required. A site that is not licensed for this market is outside the local regulator's supervision: its players have no access to that regulator's protection or dispute resolution, and deposits, payments or winnings may be blocked or confiscated. Depending on local law, using such a site may also lead to fines or prosecution. The register records for Hungary: Illegal: SZTFH orders the blocking of unauthorised sites and restricts offshore advertising.
